Introduction of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fiber

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber, referred to as UHMWPE fiber, is an unbranched linear polyethylene with a molecular weight of more than 1.5 million. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber is the strongest and most resilient fiber in the world. Its strength is 15 times that of steel.

Functions of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fiber

1. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber has excellent impact resistance. It has a high ability to absorb energy and resist impact during deformation and shaping.

2. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber has excellent wear resistance. Its wear resistance and bending fatigue are much higher than other fibers. Its processing performance is also relatively superior, and it is easy to make other composite materials and fabrics.

3. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber is chemically resistant and has relatively stable chemical properties. Most chemical substances are not easy to corrode it. Only a very small number of organic solutions can slightly swell it, and its mechanical properties are less than 10%.

4. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber has good light resistance. Because the chemical structure of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber is stable, its light resistance is also the best among high-tech fibers.

Application fields of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fiber

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber (UHMWPE) is used in ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), etc.:

1. Increase the tensile strength and compressive strength of UHPC.

2. Improve the toughness of UHPC and prevent the generation and expansion of cracks.

3. Improve the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of UHPC.

4. Improve the fluidity and self-compactness of UHPC, and the construction performance is better.

Usage Method of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fiber

Recommended dosage: 1-2kg/m3, concrete with special requirements can reach 15kg/m3.

Mixing process: add aggregate → add fiber → add cement → add water → stir → add water to make the fiber fully dispersed.

FAQs of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fiber

Is UHMWPE Fiber heat resistant?

UHMWPE fiber has moderate heat resistance. It begins to soften around 150°C (302°F) and melts at approximately 190°C (374°F). It’s less heat-resistant than some other high-performance fibers like aramid, but it retains much of its strength even when wet.

How is UHMWPE Fiber made?

The manufacturing process involves:

  • Solution spinning: Dissolving UHMWPE in a solvent and then extruding it through a spinneret.
  • Drawing: Stretching the fibers to align the polymer chains and enhance strength.
  • Precipitation: Removing the solvent to solidify the fiber.

Can UHMWPE Fiber be recycled?

Recycling UHMWPE fiber can be challenging due to its chemical structure and the processes involved in its production. However, there are ongoing efforts to develop more sustainable and recyclable forms of UHMWPE.

What are the alternatives to UHMWPE Fiber?

Alternatives may include:

  • Aramid fibers: Known for higher heat resistance and electrical insulation.
  • Carbon fibers: Stronger and stiffer but heavier and more expensive.
  • Glass fibers: Less expensive but not as strong or lightweight.
