Foam concrete is a kind of concrete with lightweight and has ideal strength. Because of the hollow structure in foam concrete, it has the function of absorbing heat and isolating sound.

The density of foamed concrete is 300-1200 kg/m3, and the thermal conductivity is between 0.08-0.3W/ (m ·K).

Foam concrete is widely used in CLC blocks, lightweight partition panels, roof insulation, floor cushion construction, floor heating backfilling, and other occasions.

At the same time, foam concrete is also a good sound absorption material, which can be used in highway sound insulation boards, sound absorption boards, and other fields.

Generally speaking, foam concrete is a kind of building material with multi-function, environmental protection, and economy, which has a wide application prospect.

  • Technical index of foam concrete

    1. Dry density

The general dry density of foam concrete is 300-1100kg/m3, and some northern areas can reach 100-1200kg/m3 under the same strength; Used for floor heating, external wall insulation, and foundation insulation is 100-300kg/m3; Used for cast-in-place and non-load-bearing wall products 300-700kg/m3; Used for load-bearing wall and other load-bearing products 700-1200kg/m3.

    2. Thermal conductivity

At present, foam concrete is mostly used for building insulation, so its thermal conductivity should be as low as possible. The thermal conductivity of floor heating and exterior wall insulation works is generally controlled at 0.06-0.18W/(M·K) according to its dry density.

    3. Intensity

Because the density of foam concrete is very low, and most of it is natural curing, even if the cementing material with a higher dosage is used, its strength is correspondingly low.  So the strength of foam concrete is roughly 0.5-2.5mpa. Pure insulation use and do filling or covering, generally in 0.5-1mpa, the structure can be controlled in 1-2.5mpa, bearing heavy should be controlled in 5-10mpa.

    4. Water absorption

Water absorption is an important technical index to measure the durability and physical properties of foam concrete. Almost all the failure processes affecting concrete durability are closely related to water, especially foam concrete. According to the characteristics of foam concrete, its water absorption rate can be controlled by 10%-25%, and if high insulation products, it is controlled by 5%-10%.

    5. Drying shrinkage value

Foam concrete shrinkage will make its finished product or construction surface crack. In general, its drying shrinkage value of 0.6-1.0mm/m is allowed, if it is for some middle and high-end applications, in 0.6-0.8mm/m.

Why should the cement material of foam concrete use early strength cement?

In foam concrete, because of the requirement of permeability so the effect on strength is not very good, so will add some admixtures to enhance its strength. That it adds cement materials and why must be early strength cement?

In foam concrete, it takes a long time for the cement to set and harden to reach the required strength value. But because of the foam concrete water retention is poor, exudation rate is high, if you don't condensation material for a long time, at the same time can also lead to uneven density, foam defoaming and a whole collapse, cement must choose so early strength cement, accelerate the foam concrete early strength, improve the foam concrete early strength and no significant adverse effect on the strength of late.

  • Lightweight

Foam concrete has a low density. In practical application, the density grade of ordinary foam concrete is 300 kg/m3~1200kg/m3. In recent years, ultra-lightweight foam concrete with low density has also appeared, but it has not been widely used in construction engineering. In practical engineering, the density of foam concrete can be reduced to 200 kg/m3~700 kg/m3.

Due to the low density of foam concrete, it is applied to the building's inner and outer walls, layers, layers, columns, and other parts, can reduce the weight of the building by about 25%, and some can even reduce the weight of up to 34%. In addition, the bearing capacity of structural members can be improved by using foam concrete instead of ordinary concrete. Therefore, the rational use of foam concrete in construction engineering can not only ensure the durability of the building and the bearing capacity of the structure, but also greatly reduce the cost of the project, and has significant economic benefits and broad market prospects.

    Good insulation performance

The good thermal insulation performance of foam concrete is determined by its internal structure. By observing the internal structure of foam concrete, it can be found that the foam concrete is filled with a large number of closed and uniform small round holes.  These pores maximize the fixation of air, resulting in low thermal conductivity and good insulation. The excellent thermal performance of foam concrete is not possessed by ordinary concrete. The thermal conductivity of foam concrete with common density grade of 300kg/m3~1200kg/m3 is 0.08W/(m·K)~0.3W/(m·K). If this kind of foam concrete is widely used in building roofing material and wall material, it will produce a good energy-saving effect.

Excellent sound insulation and fire resistance performance

As a kind of porous material, foam concrete contains a lot of closed pores and has good sound insulation performance. Therefore, foam concrete can be widely used on building floors, highway sound insulation boards, underground building top floors, and other building parts, as a sound insulation layer. At the same time, foam concrete also has the general characteristics of inorganic materials, that is, not easy to burn, and has good fire resistance. A large number of research data show that the dry bulk density of foam concrete is in the range of 500 kg/m3 to 900 kg/m3, the compressive strength is in the range of 2.5 Mpa-7.5 MPa, the fire resistance of foam concrete can reach 2.7h, the sound insulation performance can reach 20dB, and the impact resistance can reach 100dB. It is a kind of high-quality soundproof refractory material that can be promoted vigorously.

    Good seismic performance

Because of its special porous structure, foam concrete has the characteristics of low density, lightweight, and low elastic modulus. These characteristics make the foam concrete structure bear less seismic force and the propagation speed of vibration waves are much slower than that of the ordinary concrete structures. According to seismology, the longer the seismic period, the faster the shock energy is absorbed by a building structure. Therefore, foam concrete has an excellent damping effect. Appropriate application of foam concrete in specific parts of construction engineering can effectively improve the seismic performance of buildings, and enhance the safety and robustness of seismic buildings.

Foam concrete not only has a variety of excellent performance, but in the production process can also be mixed with a large number of industrial waste, not only effective use of resources, waste into treasure, conducive to environmental protection but also greatly reduce the cost of foam concrete.

  • What is Foam Concrete?

Foam concrete is a highly workable low-density material containing up to 80% air. It is usually self-leveling, self-compacting, and can be pumped. The risk of plastic shrinkage or settlement cracking is obviously lower than that of standard concrete.

    Foam Concrete Advantages

Foam concrete is a versatile and practical material that can be customized to a variety of project needs and operating conditions.

    1. Pumpable foam concrete - can be pumped over long distances and can be placed by conventional concrete pumps or rotor-stator pumps (often referred to as "worm pumps").

    2. Self-compacting and self-leveling - making it ideal for inaccessible troughs where compaction is difficult or impossible. It allows controlled discharge into narrow openings, fully fills void space, including bottom cut pockets, and fully encloses and protects piping.

    3. Frost/thawing resistance - High air content makes it frost/thawing resistant and provides excellent heat and sound insulation.

    4. The load is dispersed and the settlement risk is negligible

    5. Insulation properties - Can be used as a low-density insulator ironing plate

    6. Lightweight concrete with high gas content

    7. Highly mobile - Easy to place and finish due to a single process installation, requiring only dumping and leveling. Controlled placement rate to ensure applicable to any load characteristics.

    Foam Concrete Application

Foam concrete is ideal for filling void Spaces such as abandoned fuel tanks, sewer systems, pipes, and culverts -- especially in hard-to-access areas. It is a recognized medium for repairing road ditches.

Unwanted voids: pipes, service pipes and shafts, sumps

Abandoned structures: culverts and subways, redundant sewers, cellars, and basements

Structural stability: abutment, tunnel stability, embankment

Insulation filler: a leveling layer of low-density insulators used to cover the site

What is the mix for foam concrete?

The foam concrete mixture itself is composed of fine sand, cement, water, and stabilized foam. A standard formula is 2 parts cement and 1 part fine, dry sand, and a foam generator.

    How strong is concrete foam?

    Foam-based concrete has a dry density of 400 to 1600 kg/m3 (25lb/FT3 to 100lb/FT3) and a 7-day strength of about 1 to 10 N/mm2 (145 to 1450 psi).

  • Foam Concrete Properties

Foam concrete is a versatile building material. It is simple to produce and relatively cheap compared with autoclaved aerated concrete. Foam concrete compounds that use fly ash in the slurry mixture are cheaper and have less impact on the environment. The density of foam concrete varies from 200kg/m3 to 1,600kg/m3, depending on the application.  Lighter products can be cut to different sizes. Although the product is considered to be a concrete form (with air bubbles instead of aggregate), its high thermal and acoustic quality makes it a distinct application from conventional concrete.

    Foam Concrete Advantage

Foam concrete is no less thermally conductive than wood -- 40cm walls can withstand -30° frost.

Foam concrete can withstand exposure to fire on one side for at least 3 hours, with an average of 5 hours.

What is Foam Concrete Used For?

Foam concrete can be produced with dry densities of 400 to 1600kg/m3 (25lb/ft 3 to 100lb/ft 3) and 7-day strengths of approximately 1 to 10N/mm2 (145 to 1450psi) respectively.  Foam concrete is fire-resistant and its heat and sound insulation properties make it suitable for a wide range of uses, from insulating floors and roofs to void filling. It is also particularly useful for groove recovery.

Some applications of foam concrete are:

    Bridge method/embankment

    Pipe abandonment/ring filling

    Trench backfill

    Precast block

    Prefabricated wall elements/panels

    Cast-in-place/cast-in-place walls

    Insulation compensation laying

    Insulation floor

    Insulating roof mortar

    Sunken part filling

    Groove back

    A sub-base for the highway

    Filling of hollow blocks

    Prefabricated insulation board

    Foam Concrete Trends and Development

Until the mid-1990s, foam concrete was considered weak, non-durable, and had high shrinkage properties. This is due to the unstable foam bubbles which make foam concrete unsuitable for the production of very low density (less than 300 kg/m 3 dry density) and load-bearing structure applications. It is therefore important to ensure that the air ensnared in the foam concrete is contained in stable, very small, uniform bubbles that remain intact and isolated and do not thus increase the permeability of the cement slurry between the voids.

The development of synthase-based foaming agents, admixtures to enhance foam stability, and specialized foam generation, mixing, and pumping equipment has improved the stability of foam concrete, allowing the production of lightweight concrete with densities as low as 75 kg/ m3 and a density of only 7.5% of water. The enzyme is composed of highly active proteins from biotechnological sources other than proteolysis. In recent years, foam concrete has been widely used in highways, commercial buildings, disaster relief buildings, schools, apartments, and residential development in Germany, The United States, Brazil, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Kuwait, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Botswana, Mexico, and other countries.

Foam concrete has been studied as a bullet trap for high-intensity US firearms training grounds. This work led to the deployment of the product SACON by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which can be transported directly to a metal recovery facility when it wears out, without the need to separate trapped bullets because the calcium carbonate in the concrete acts as a flux.

The energy absorption capacity of foam concrete was approximated by drop tests and was found to vary between 4 and 15 MJ/m 3, depending on its density. The optimum absorption was estimated from a mixture of 1000 kg/m 3 of moderate density at a ratio of water to cement (w/c) 0.6 to 0.7.
